Most of UNT's students will take 18 education credits in their junior year. There is plenty of space in your schedule to accommodate a minor or other electives.

The final year of your career at UNT will involve participation in our Professional Development School. This consists of a semester of observing a mentor teacher in the classroom and then a semester of clinical teaching with a mentor teacher.  Educational Methods courses are also taken, usually in the school district where you are observing and teaching.

UNT's Professional Development School program offers extensive hands on experience for students. We partner with 30 school districts in the North Texas to collaborate in the creation of excellent future teachers. In their senior year, UNT teacher candidates are placed in their schools to observe, assist, practice and teach. UNT students benefit from the experience of their mentor teacher while also sharing new teaching techniques and technology with their mentors.

UNT's teacher candidates have the opportunity to participate in several service learning opportunities with a wide range of populations.  

• Project SUCCESS partners with the Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD to offer services for learning to work with Latino families on literacy development.
• Students in our Teaching and Learning course are partnered with after school programs in their grade level to develop skills among students from a variety of economic backgrounds and cultural groups.
• Students in EDRE 4450 work with early childhood populations through one-on-one readings out loud to foster motivated readers and development of pre-literacy skills.

During the year long PDS mentorship year, all students are mentored by both a UNT field supervisor as well as their cooperating teacher at their school campus.  The student, the mentor teacher and the UNT supervisor make up a triad who together work as a unit through constant communication to support, enhance and prepare the clinical teacher to become a reflective professional. Teacher candidates and mentors also participate in collaborative assessments through the clinical teaching experience.
