M.Ed. candidates will typically complete 12 semester hours that focus on pedagogy, teaching principles, and human development. The courses are complemented by up to 20 hours of observation in a classroom. Candidates should be prepared to take their content certification exams.

M.Ed. candidates continue with graduate coursework that introduces them to research, classroom management strategies, and curriculum development while also providing ways to use theory in practice.

Candidates complete their research courses and present a capstone project.  The coursework is accompanied by a one-year paid classroom internship.

Candidates may choose to complete a Summer Intensive Alternative Certification Program that supports future teachers with 12 hours of coursework, workshops, and testing support to allow them to be on track to become the Teacher of Record in 4 months. Candidates will be hired as the Teacher of Record in a partnering district where the job will become permanent at the completion of the school year.  Additionally, all the courses count towards the M.Ed. which can be completed in the second year.

The Education programs at UNTD are competency-based and offer candidates experiences and opportunities to practice observing students in classrooms and teach lessons prior to student teaching. The faculty in the School of Education facilitate a deeper understanding of the post-covid students in the classroom setting, the challenges teachers face, and what it takes to foster student wellbeing and achievement.

Candidates are exposed to innovative methods in critical disciplines such special education, bilingual education, Spanish education, and English as a Second Language (ESL). This ensures UNT Dallas graduates will be in high demand across the region. We prepare students to work with individuals from a variety of backgrounds and circumstances, including those from low-income communities and those with different cultural, linguistic, and life experiences.
